Not to undercut the finality of this Squid Game chapter (it may very well be the end of Seong Gi-hun) - but Netflix isn't letting a cash cow like this one go

On May 6, Netflix unveiled the first (very vague) teaser for the return of its most popular TV series, Squid Game season 3. Netflix has promised that this will be the last season of the story it began telling in 2021, and there's a grave sense of finality even the seconds of footage we see in the trailer. But is Squid Game really ending? We'll talk about that in a sec - first, though, feast your eyes on the Squid Game season 3 teaser trailer:

Though that coffin box does look pretty comfy, you can't help but feel bad for Seong Gi-hun. And after two seasons of surviving the impossible, it may be that this upcoming chapter will spell doom for our ex-gambling addict protagonist. But let's circle back to what this is really about - will Squid Game season 3 really be its last?

Officially, the answer to that question is still "yes," although as Popverse has reported before, an English-language adaptation of the show is already in the works from director David Fincher. But in the same article we've just linked, we also reported that original series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had an idea for a spinoff about the show's infamous masked guards.

Couple this with the fact that Squid Game season 2 repeatedly broke streaming records previously unimagined for Netflix, and we'd say there's a massive chance that the Korean team that brought us Squid Game will have more stories to tell within this universe, whether or not Seong makes it. After all, isn't "people want to keep watching" kind of Squid Game's whole deal?

Squid Game season 3 airs on Netflix June 27.
