Spider-Noir is the pop-art sensation Nicolas Cage dreamed of for his first TV show

Despite his love of superheroes, Nicolas Cage didn't approach Spider-Noir as a superhero series

Considering how long and varied his career has been, it is almost shocking to discover that Spider-Noir is Nicolas Cage’s first foray into the world of television. The actor has been a mainstay in films for generations, but, aside from an unaired pilot and a Netflix documentary, Cage waited for the “pop-art sensation” that is Spider-Noir for his first starring television role.

During a recent interview, Nicolas Cage talked about the pseudo-spinoff to his role in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and what makes it such a unique take on the superhero genre. For Cage, it was all about smashing multiple genres together to create something unique. “I get a lot of inspiration with art, like Warhol with ‘Wild at Heart’ and what I did with the Elvis aura,” Nicolas Cage explained. “Here, I was looking at Roy Lichtenstein, and I wanted to do a pop-art mashup. I believe in art synthesis, or what you can do in one art form you can do in another, and that was what I was interested in.”

Despite being a longtime fan of superheroes (he famously nearly played Superman in Tim Burton’s abandoned Superman Lives film), Nicolas Cage didn’t approach Spider-Noir like a superhero movie. “I wasn’t necessarily interested in playing a superhero, per se. I was interested in seeing if I could channel old-style black-and-white film acting and collide it with Spider-Man. That was the danger and excitement.”

Spider-Noir, which Nicolas Cage refers to as a “pop-art sensation” in that same interview, is currently streaming on Prime Video.
