Making television is wild, just ask Ella Purnell. The Yellowjackets actress finds that making movies is far more structured, but there’s something about the chaos of TV that she just can’t quit.
Speaking to a crowd at MCM x EGX 2024, Purnell mused about the differences between film and television production. “With films you’ve got the whole script. You know what you’re doing and it tends to be a shorter shoot, and you not always, but sometimes get more prep time, and you get more rehearsals. With TV you get the script the day before, and you just do what you’re told, and you don’t always get the luxury of tons of prep time. That’s kind of why I love it as well, to be fair. I kind of like the spontaneous nature of it. I’m clearly addicted to chaos or the mania because it’s so incredibly adrenalizing.”
That’s one of the things that drew Purnell to Yellowjackets. The actress found the speed of the television production to be exhilarating. “Yellowjackets, we had no prep time at all, and I really learned a lot on that job about trusting the writers, and just changing the character in ways that are outside of your comfort zone of predictability.”
In fact, Purnell was initially reluctant to do more television. She wanted to get back to movies. Little did she realize that Yellowjackets would draw her back in.
“I didn’t hesitate with Yellowjackets because I knew it was one season. So, for me, it’s like, okay limited series, it’s one shoot. But there are other tv shows that I have turned down because it’s a 7-year deal or an 11-year deal, and I love variety. I get bored easily and I like changing things up. That’s different on a show like Fallout, because no two days are the same. It’s also why I can’t do theatre. I really need variety in my life. I’m quite addicted to that chaos.”
Yellowjackets season 3 will premiere February 16, 2025 on Showtime.
