There's a lot to be learned when a legend like James Brolin rolls up on set. The veteran actor's latest project is in a new Western drama series on Netflix called Ransom Canyon. Brolin plays a retired military captain aptly nicknamed "Cap," who hires a foreman named Yancy Grey to work on his ranch. Little does he know, Yancy has a mysterious past of his own that he'd like to keep hidden. We recently got the chance to speak to Jack Schumacher, who plays Yancy Grey on Ransom Canyon, about his experiences working with James Brolin.

"Man, I love James," Schumacher said. "I've been very lucky to work with a lot of really incredible actors and he is one of them. You'll hear about actors who do a great job of doing something different each take or coming up with ideas for their character. And James always kind of kept me on my toes like that. Like not in a bad way, but he was always trying something new, so being able to react off of that is super easy. And... I've watched a couple scenes between him and I'll see a moment where they'll cut to me after he did something. That was a very, very real reaction... because I was just like, 'What?' Like he'll just throw something new at me."

It's heartening to hear that such an established actor like James Brolin still brings a ton of creativity to set. The actor is eighty-four years old, and is still finding ways to reinvent himself and his characters onscreen, with each take. That takes guts.

Ransom Canyon marks Brolin's return to a Netflix project, having been the Narrator of the streamer's adaptation of Jeff Lemire's comic, Sweet Tooth. In 2024, Sweet Tooth released its third and final season, so if you've been hungering for some more James Brolin Netflix projects, mosey on over to Ransom Canyon.
