One Piece star David Dastmalchian was already a big fan of the series before he was cast in the Netflix show
Honestly, it is safer to assume that everyone is a One Piece fan until they admit otherwise.

It feels like everyone involved with the live-action One Piece, from the cast through to the crew, is a big fan of the original anime and manga. And why wouldn’t they be? One Piece has never been bigger than it is now, so it isn’t surprising that an actor like David Dastmalchian has admitted that he loves the extensive world that Eiichiro Oda has created for One Piece.
During an interview at San Diego Comic Con, Dastmalchian explained that, while his character was called Mr. 3 in One Piece, he’s “going to be No. 1 in your hearts.” Dastmalchian is used to taking strange characters and making us love them; remember him as Polka Dot Man in The Suicide Squad?
The actor also expressed a pretty good understanding of the deep – and often very strange – lore of One Piece. “In the lore of One Piece mythology, which is one of the most brilliant constructs of a mythology, I think, that’s ever been created, because I’m a big comic book fan – you know that I love that world, baby! But Oda, who created One Piece, who’s been creating this for decades, the specificity and the way in which people get their special and unique superhuman abilities is most of the time from eating these different fruits.”
Dastmalchian admits that he shares a special kinship with Mr. 3, who ate the Wax-Wax fruit and can shoot wax out of his hands that hardens, since he’s a massive “candle nerd.” We can only hope that he gets himself a special One Piece candle after he’s done filming his scenes for the Netflix series.
One Piece season two is due out in 2026, with a third season presumably in the works already.
