NCIS: Hawai'i fan petition reaches 42000 signatures amid show's cancellation on CBS

Fans sometimes need the cathartic release of one last attempt to save a show

Is there such a thing as too much NCIS? Not according to the fans of NCIS: Hawai'i, which was placed on the chopping block by CBS earlier this year. After three seasons of solving crimes in the sun and surf, the spinoff of one of the most successful American television franchises has come to an end. The fans aren’t letting the show go without a fight, though.

It is a story we’ve heard several times in the past year. A show with a strong and vocal fanbase gets canceled by the network, only for fans to swoop in and try to save it, usually with thousands of signatures on a fan petition extolling the importance of bringing the show back. In the case of NCIS: Hawai'i, their fan petition has amassed over 42,000 signatures at the time of writing, just short of its 50,000-signature goal.

We’re afraid that bringing back NCIS: Hawai'i is going to be an even bigger uphill battle than recent efforts like Our Flag Means Death and Station 19. Both of those shows could entertain the possibility of another network (probably Netflix) seeing the demand for another season or two of the show and offering it a lifeline. However, it is difficult to imagine CBS allowing its valuable NCIS franchise to be produced by another network. It is also unlikely that they will bring the show back from cancellation now that they’ve made their decision.

This isn’t to say that we don’t love seeing fans fight for their favorite shows – the passion and love they have for these characters is why we love TV in the first place. If nothing else, the petition serves as a testament to that passion and allows fans to share what NCIS: Hawai'i has meant to them over the past three years.
