In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Avengers fight invaders from other worlds, the Guardians of the Galaxy fight space mercenaries, but it’s the Punisher who fights everyday criminals on the streets of New York City - and he plays for keeps. Thanks to a recent appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, his upcoming Disney+ special, and a guest appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Frank Castle is more popular than ever. If you’re looking to get up to speed on the MCU’s Punisher, this guide breaks down his timeline, the best watch order, and essential episodes.

How to watch the MCU Punisher in release order

Watching the MCU Punisher in release order is relatively simple. Jon Bernthal made his debut as Frank Castle in Daredevil season 2 before getting his own series. The Punisher lasted for 2 seasons before getting cancelled, then the character reappeared in Daredevil: Born Again season 1. (Punisher did not appear in Born Again season 2, despite fan expectation.) The character will next appear in a Disney+ special titled The Punisher: One Last Kill before making a guest appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day later this year. Not a bad comeback for someone who was cancelled in 2019.

How to watch the MCU Punisher in chronological order

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe sometimes skips around the timeline, there is no difference between Punisher’s release order and chronological order. While some episodes have flashbacks, those are told with a present day framing device. In short, Frank’s MCU story has largely been told in linear order. Keep in mind, we might get more context on One Last Kill’s place in the timeline after it is released, but some rumors say it takes place after Daredevil: Born Again, which matches the release order.

In short, if you want to watch the MCU Punisher in chronological order, just look at our release order list from the previous section.

If you’re looking to get up to speed on the MCU Punisher but your time is short, here is a speedrun playlist to get to know the character. Consider it a TL;DR watch order, giving you the basics of Frank Castle, his life, and his mission.

  • Daredevil season 2 episode 3 ‘New York’s Finest’ – This episode will tell you everything you need to know about the Punisher’s philosophy, and it features a classic rooftop confrontation with Daredevil.
  • Daredevil season 2 episode 4 ‘Penny and Dime’ – This episode examines Frank Castle’s trauma, and how the loss of his family drives him as a person.
  • The Punisher season 1 episode 3 ‘Kandahar’ – This episode features flashbacks to Frank’s military service and explores how those experiences drive his mission as the Punisher.
  • The Punisher season 1 episode 11 ‘Danger Close’ – A classic episode where Frank Castle fully embraces his war on crime, becoming closer to the Punisher fans know and love from the comics.
  • The Punisher season 1 episode 12 ‘Home’ -Frank’s past and present come together as he continues his war on crime and struggles to find a new sense of what home is. Viewers widely regard this as the best episode of the series, so don’t sleep on it.

What should I watch first, Punisher or Daredevil?

Watch Daredevil season 2 before starting The Punisher. Daredevil is set earlier chronologically, it introduces Frank Castle, and sets up his friendship with Karen Page, which becomes important in The Punisher. You can still watch The Punisher without seeing Daredevil first, as the series does a good job of bringing new viewers up to speed. However, you’ll get more out of the show and have a deeper appreciation if you start with Daredevil season 2.

Is the Netflix Punisher canon to the MCU?

Yes, the Netflix Punisher (which can now be seen on Disney+) is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there was a weird period of the time where Punisher and the other Marvel Netflix shows were exiled from canon. In 2024 Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige used his introduction in an MCU timeline book to imply that the Marvel Netflix shows weren’t a part of the Sacred Timeline.

The initial idea was that the Matt Murdock seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk was different from the one seen in Netflix's Daredevil and Defenders. However, that changed during the production of Daredevil: Born Again when Marvel Studios realized it would be a mistake if they didn’t embrace the Netflix shows. Not only are the shows treated as canon, but Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will be making an appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, firmly cementing him into the mainstream MCU.

Where can I watch the MCU Punisher?

If you want to keep track of Punisher’s war on crime, a Disney+ subscription is your best bet. Disney+ is currently the streaming home for Daredevil, Punisher, and Daredevil: Born Again. The Punisher: One Last Kill will exclusively premiere on Disney+ on May 12, 2026, which means that until Marvel Studios puts it out on home media (assuming they do), the streaming service is the only way to watch it.

After The Punisher: One Last Kill, the character's next appearance will be on the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will be released July 31, 2026.
