Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio open up about how inviting Kevin Feige & Marvel Studios were in shaping Daredevil: Born Again
Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio were involved in developing the storyline for Daredevil: Born Again
The journey for Daredevil: Born Again has been an unusual one. In 2018 Netflix canceled Daredevil, and for a time it appeared the Marvel Universe was moving on. However, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio began reprising their roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk in other Marvel projects. In 2022 Marvel Studios announced that they had greenlit a series called Daredevil: Born Again, which would be a continuation of the original series.
However, production of the series was plagued with creative difficulties. The original premise of the show strayed from the tone of the Netflix series. Luckily, Marvel Studios caught on to the problem, giving the series a creative overhaul. It turns out that Cox and D’Onofrio played a big role in that overhaul. Speaking to a crowd at Tampa Bay Comic Convention, the actors opened up about how Marvel invited them to help reshape the series.
“Charlie and I are a team,” D’Onofrio began. “We’re friends, we’ve been doing these characters for a long time. When we’re on set, we are part of the tone. That happens a lot on movie sets and on series. If the main characters are substantial and handled in a way that is serious, then the actors do set the tone. The director sets the tone and actors set the tone, and overall, the production team will set the tone too.”
”On our set, Charlie has his half of the show, and I have my half of the show. I know what his work ethic is, and he knows mine, so it sets a tone. We are in control of that in a lot of ways.” D’Onofrio continued.
Charlie Cox echoed his sentiments.
“Marvel has been so collaborative with us and so respectful to us, and really invited us into the room - so to speak - to help navigate the show, and help tell a story. It’s clear to them that the thing we care about the most is these characters, and the show, and the quality of it.”
“I’ve worked on things where some of the people involved haven’t been there for the right reasons, and we’re lucky that almost everyone we’ve come in contact with on this show has been psyched to be there. What a gift,” Cox said.
“We’ve been supported from the beginning by the bosses,” D’Onofrio said. “From the top guys, from Kevin Feige and everyone else that’s involved in the whole Marvel Universe. We’ve been very fortunate to come into Marvel and be so supported. These guys have supported us immensely. We made some changes early on in the new series when we were shooting. They didn’t have to take care of us as well as they did. They really did the right thing. Charlie and I knew that we had to do it full-on for you guys. We knew that you guys were expecting a certain thing, and we wanted to deliver that so bad. The bosses follow suit. It was amazing, the support we got,” D’Onofrio continued.
In fact, Cox recalled a moment where Feige directly asked him for input. “I remember having an early conversation with Kevin Feige, and him asking me these questions, ‘What are you thinking, what do you want to do?’ And I was just like, ‘Oh shit, I thought you were going to tell me what to do.’”
