Yellowstone spinoff Marshals knows it needs to shake Kayce Dutton out of his happy ending

The end of Yellowstone was a big deal with Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes — after five seasons of drama and turmoil, he came to a place of peace with his family on the East Camp. It was a rare happy ever after — so what would lead him to leave that behind for the new CBS procedural spin-off, Marshals?
Grimes, as it turns out, was asking that same question when the idea of Marshals was first brought up to him.
"My mom loves procedurals," Grimes told Entertainment Weekly. "I wasn't too familiar with the format. I was like, 'His story ended so perfectly. I don't know if we should go back into it.' I was very reluctant at first. I'd never heard of anything like this before."
What ended up making him sign on, he explains, was hearing showrunner Spencer Hednut’s take on what the show could be.
"In that first conversation with Luke, he was like, 'Kayce's happy. That's not very interesting,'" Hednut told EW. "So we knew that something had to shake him out of that." (What is that something? No one is saying just yet, but whatever it is, it leads to Kayce becoming a "temporarily deputized member of the U.S. Marshals," per the outlet.)
By the time the two had finished talking, Grimes said, "I realized we're not just trying to juice a stone and get a paycheck, there really is a story to tell.” As to what the story is, he teased, “This guy used to be a SEAL, and we never explored that."
Marshals begins March 1 on CBS.
