Are you ready to board Oceanic Flight 815? The journey may be bumpy, but it will be one of the most unforgettable television experiences you’ve ever had.
Lost is more than a television drama, it’s an experience. The science-fiction series was developed by J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber. The show follows a group of survivors who become stranded on an island after their flight crashes. However, this is not Gilligan’s Island. The survivors quickly learn that there is more to the island than meets the eye. Their new home has mysterious facilities, a deadly smoke monster, and a mysterious group of locals with a dark and deadly purpose. If you love mysteries and you love lore, then you’ll love Lost.
If you’ve ever wanted to get into Lost, but aren’t sure where to start, Popverse has you covered! This guide will tell you everything you need to know about the fan favorite series, what the ending means, and how to watch it in release and chronological order.
How to watch Lost in release order
The good news is watching Lost in release order is fairly easy to do. There aren’t any spin-offs, movies, or sequels to follow. All you need to do is watch each season in order, the Lost: Missing Pieces web-series, and the epilogue short.
- Lost season 1
- Lost season 2
- Lost season 3
- Lost: Missing Pieces
- Lost season 4
- Lost season 5
- Lost season 6
- ”The New Man in Charge” (epilogue short film found on the season 6 DVD)
Like I said, fairly simple. The chronological order is a different story though….
How to watch Lost in chronological order
The story of Lost isn’t always linear. The series relied heavily on flashbacks, which helped build the survivor’s backstories. Later seasons added flash-forwards and then time travel. And that’s not even getting into the flash-sideways.
Not to worry, this timeline will break it down, episode by episode. Just remember, some episodes take place in multiple eras.
This chronological list was put together using resources from Lostpedia and Lost - A Chronological Experience. Their assistance is greatly appreciated.

Flash-sideways
I’m not going to mince words here. The flash-sideways don’t have a place chronologically because they exist outside of time and space. As we learn in the last episode, the flash-sideways scenes take place in a purgatory realm between life and death. Each of the survivors wind up there at the same time, regardless of when they died.
In other words, don’t try to put a calendar date on the flash-sideways scenes, unless you want a headache.

Where else can I follow the Lost story?
If you want to experience the full story of Lost, you have to go beyond the television series. In 2006 Hyperion Publishing released Bad Twin, a novel set in the Lost universe. The book is credited to Gary Troup, but in reality it was written by Laurence Shames. Troup is meant to be a character in the Lost universe, specifically the Oceanic passenger who got sucked into the turbine during the first episode. The writers and producers of Lost have mostly disavowed Bad Twin, so it shouldn’t be considered canon.
In 2008 Ubisoft released a video game titled Lost: Via Domus for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows. The game is set during the first 70 days on the island, however, the producers of Lost have stated that the game isn’t canon.
During the show’s run, the writers and producers set up an alternate reality game called The Lost Experience. This ARG expanded the Lost universe with in-character blog posts, fictitious company websites, and pieces of content. Fans were invited to search for clues and solve mysteries. According to the Lost producers, these elements were canon.

What’s the deal with the Lost ending? Is everyone dead?
Be warned, this section contains spoilers for the final season of Lost.
While the first 5 seasons of Lost contained flashbacks and flash-forwards, season 6 contained various scenes in a mysterious alternate reality, which have been dubbed flash-sideways. These scenes depicted the survivors leading different lives.
In the final episode we learn that the flash-sideways were a state of purgatory between life and death. It was a waiting place for the survivors to find each other and move on together as a group.
The flash-sideways existed outside of normal time, so the characters were all there the same time regardless of when they did. For example, Boone died in season 1, and Jack died in season 6, but both characters wound up in the flash-sideways at the same time. For the characters who didn’t die onscreen during the series, we’re meant to assume that they died of old age and joined the other survivors in the flash-sideways.
The series ends with everyone (seriously, EVERYONE) meeting up together in a church, and moving on to the next phase of the afterlife.
Some people have misinterpreted the ending, believing it meant that everyone had been dead since the first episode. That’s not the case. The events on the island were real.
