Lost star Josh Holloway still doesn’t understand what was going on in the series finale 15 years later

Are you confused by the Lost series finale? If it makes you feel any better, one of the show’s biggest stars isn’t sure what was happening either.

The series finale reveals that the flash-sideways seen throughout season six took place in a spiritual bridge to the afterlife where the various Oceanic 815 survivors could reunite before crossing over. Some viewers interpreted it as purgatory, and others wondered if the characters had been dead the whole time.

Sawyer actor Josh Holloway couldn’t make heads or tails of it. “I had no idea, and I was just very interested in how they were going to pivot from everyone’s understanding that it was a purgatory in a way,” Holloway says during a panel at Florida Supercon. “And I was like, ‘How are you going to do that?’ And I was just curious, and they did it in their way, which I still don’t understand. Please explain.”

Henry Ian Cusick, who plays Desmond, clarified that all the events on the island happened, and that the survivors hadn’t been dead for the entire series. “No, it wasn’t purgatory. What happened on the island happened. Everything that happened on the island happened.”

“I always thought it was purgatory, but then the parallel life thing,” Holloway adds. “And then I was like, ‘Oh…okay.’ So, I’m not really clear, but I bought it. I did have a cabin in the mountains of Colorado I offered the writers in case people were going after them.”

Say what you will about that ending, but you have to hand it to the writers. After all, we’re still talking about that finale and asking questions over a decade later.

You can watch the full Lost panel with Josh Holloway and Henry Ian Cusick from Miami Beach's Florida Supercon 2025 here.
