Home Improvement won't get the Malcolm in the Middle revival treatment because of the kids, says Tim Allen

Tim Allen has said that there are some "personality problems" with some of the former child actors from Home Improvement.

Does everybody know what time it is? Not Tool Time, apparently. Despite the success of the Malcom in the Middle reunion, we shouldn’t expect a similar Home Improvement special to come out anytime soon. Not because Tim Allen or fans don’t want to see it happen, but because of some “personality problems” with the child actors from the show.

During a recent interview, Tim Allen was asked about the potential to return to the show that helped make him a household name in the 90s. Home Improvement ran for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999 and consistently got solid ratings. Despite the occasional rumor and signs of interest from fans, there hasn’t been any movement on a potential reunion special for the show. The reason, according to Tim Allen himself, is that the former child actors who starred in the show have grown up and have other things going on.

“They keep talking about how it could move forward,” Tim Allen said. “But they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys. They’ve got their own issues.”

Some of the issues Allen mentions are legal, with Zachery Ty Bryan, who played Brad, being arrested in November 2025 for a domestic violence charge. Meanwhile, Johnathan Taylor Thomas, who played middle-child Randy, has been quoted as saying he has no real interest in acting anymore.

A Home Improvement revival doesn’t seem likely, especially since Allen envisions it as focusing on the now-grown kids. “I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”
