How Adventure Time stopped being a kids show and was able to grow up and cuss in Fionna & Cake spinoff on HBO Max

The difference between Adventure Time and Fionna and Cake? “Sometimes they let us say shit.”

When Adventure Time was on Cartoon Network, the animated show had to make sure it was age appropriate. The spinoff sequel Fionna and Cake is streaming on HBO Max, which means they don’t have the same problem.

“Sometimes they let us say shit,” Fionna and Cake showrunner Adam Muto says during a panel at New York Comic Con. “We can’t let Lemoncarb say fuck, but they can say shit sometimes.”

“I was shocked the first time Cake cussed. I’m telling you. I wasn’t mad, but I was shocked,” Cake actress Roz Ryan says.

However, don’t expect the show to become South Park. As Muto explains, they’re using their ability to cuss responsibly and don’t want to overdo it.

“The original series was 6 to 11, it was a linear show. For HBO Max, it’s like a slightly different rating. So, it’s not like we do everything as foul as possible, but it is like, if it naturally makes sense, then yeah. And Roz swears. A lot,” Muto explains. “I do. But they let me,” Ryan jokes.
