HBO's The Penguin tops the entire MCU in 2024 Golden Globe nominations
HBO's gripping crime drama The Penguin has received a Golden Globe nomination in every category for which it was eligible, topping a scant nomination apiece for Deadpool & Wolverine and Agatha All Along

The Golden Globe nominees for 2025 are out, and it's great (if somewhat expected) news for fans of Matt Reeves's The Batman saga, particularly the HBO-produced spinoff The Penguin. MCU fans, however, are going to be a little bit disappointed, as the entire multiverse of entertainment only just appears on the long list of nominations. In the long-running tête-à-tête between Marvel and DC, which is now a cinematic competition as much as it is a comic book one, it appears the House of Batman has taken this victory.
Of course, there's some context needed to the story, starting with the nominations that The Penguin has received. This year, The Batman spinoff that stared Colin Farrell as the titular Oz Cobb and saw Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone/Gigante as its breakout star was eligible for three nominations. And as fans will no doubt be happy to hear, it received all of them. They are:
- The Golden Globe for Best Limited Series
- The Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Limited Series (Colin Farrell)
- The Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series (Cristin Milioti)
As I mentioned earlier, these nominations came somewhat expected, particularly the last two. Both Farrell's and Milioti's performances were a huge draw for audiences and widely praised by critics alike.
Moving over to the Disney-owned MCU, we only see two nominations on the Golden Globes list, and only one was, like The Penguin, based on performances. Those nominations in total were for:
- The Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy (Kathryn Hahn, Agatha All Along)
- The Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (Deadpool & Wolverine)
Now, something to consider before you go writing that reddit post about the doom of Marvel Studios: The 2025 Golden Globes season was a particularly quiet one for the MCU, with only Deadpool & Wolverine, Agatha All Along, What If...? Season 2 and Hulu's Echo fitting into that window (What If...? Season 3, while technically coming out before the next award show, will miss the Globes' cutoff date). So if you want to look at this positively, 50% of all MCU projects were nominated for a Golden Globe.
Which is a lot more than the Sony Spider-Verse got, just sayin'.
The 2025 Golden Globes will air Sunday, January 5 on CBS.
