Was Alanis Morissette really singing about Full House’s Dave Coulier on '90s hit 'You Oughta Know'? His sitcom co-star reveals the truth.

Dave Coulier used to bring Alanis Morissette to the Full House set, according to one of his co-stars

One of the strangest crossovers in the 90s was the rise and fall of Alanis Morissette’s romance with Full House star Dave Coulier. As a 90s kid, I was always intrigued by the bizarre contrast between Coulier’s family friendly sitcom star image and Morissette’s alternative rock sound. In 1995 Alanis’s album Jagged Little Pill was all over the radio, and there is a lot of speculation that the angry breakup song ‘You Oughta Know’ was about her breakup with Coulier.

Depending on the interview, Coulier either confirms or denies this. For her part, Alanis says the song isn’t about Coulier. However, not everyone remains convinced, and the '90s urban myth persists to this day. For example, Coulier’s Full House co-star Jodie Sweetin recently appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, and one of the questions she was asked involved the rumors about Alanis and Dave. “Is it true Alanis Morissette’s album is about [Dave Coulier]?” Michael Rosenbaum asked. “I don’t know about the whole album, but there are definitely mentions. Alanis used to come to set. I mean, not often, but I met her,” Jodie Sweetin responded.

“How long were they together? Do you know,” Rosenbaum followed up, with Sweetin saying, “I think maybe for the first or second season, something like that. Not super long, I don’t think. Might have been a little bit later though. Maybe second season.”

Actually, Coulier and Morissette dated from 1992 through 1994, which would correspond to Full House season 5-8, if you're wondering.

“That one song is probably about him,” Rosenbaum ventured, referencing the song everyone expected without actually naming it. Thankfully, Sweetin took the bait: “'You Oughta Know'? Yeah, probably. You oughta know [laughs],” she replied.

In many ways, it’s the greatest episode of Full House that never aired. Just call it 'Mr. Duplicity.'
