How the Fallout game's makers are capitalizing on Amazon's Prime Video show & its success, without rushing the next Fallout game
Fallout 5 is still years away, but Bethesda is still using Fallout 4, Fallout Shelter, and Fallout 76 to make sure Fallout Season 2 is a success for them.

Prime Video’s Fallout series isn’t necessarily meant to promote the game series it is based on. Amazon’s goal with their take on the Wasteland is to make money in their own right, but that doesn’t mean that Bethesda doesn’t see an opportunity happening. As Fallout Season 2 approaches, the game developer is making sure they capitalize on fans’ renewed interest in the games – even if they don’t have Fallout 5 ready to play just yet.
“The first go around, we expected a lot of people to come to the games,” Todd Howard, game director at Bethesda, said in a recent interview. “So we made sure that the games were ready for new audiences and returning people, whether that’s [online game] Fallout 76, Fallout 4 for single-player, or Fallout Shelter for mobile. And the response was way bigger than we ever thought."
"We were doing 5 to 6x our usual play patterns and numbers during Season 1," Howard continued. "Therefore, going into Season 2, we knew we could take advantage of that even more. Also, because we had an understanding of how the show was made and being able to sync up timelines, we were able to bring in more things, particularly Fallout 76. So yes, we were able to be more ambitious because of what we learned from Season 1 and the timeline.”
That included the new Burning Springs update for Fallout 76, which includes The Ghoul from the Fallout TV show once again played by Walton Goggins. There is also the new Anniversary Edition of Fallout 4 and new updates for Fallout Shelter to bring in elements from the show.
“Fallout right now is unique,” Howard continues. “You want to watch a show? We got a great show. You want to play an online game? We have a great online game. You want to play a single player? We have Fallout 4. You want to play a mobile game? There’s Fallout Shelter. And they’re all operating with very, very large audiences.”
The first episode of Fallout Season 2 is out now on Prime Video.
