Hey Buffy fans, you might owe a very big "thank you" to Dexter Morgan and Carrie Bradshaw. Buffy Summers herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, is reconsidering her stance on returning to the character after seeing what Showtime and Max have done with Dexter: Original Sin and And Just Like That..., respectively. 

Previously, Gellar was clear on her intention to not return as the vampire-hunting hero that defined a generation of horror fans, telling SFX Magazine that "it doesn't need to be done" (as reported by IndieWire). However, during a special appearance on The Drew Barrymore show, Gellar announced that her stance on the idea has changed. As reported by Variety, Gellar told the daytime talkshow host:

"I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect [...] But watching '[And Just Like That…]' and seeing '[Dexter: Original Sin],' and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, 'Well, maybe.'"

The cynics among us (it's me, I'm cynics) might be tempted to assume that what's really got Gellar thinking about returning is not so much the continuations of Dexter and Sex and the City (respectively), but the paychecks that went into them. However, neither series is currently poised to be particularly successful - Forbes reported on the "slump" And Just Like That... was experiencing in 2023, and Variety doesn't hold a particularly hopeful opinion on Original Sin, saying it is "Guilty of Beating a Dead Horse." So while we can't know exactly what the I Know What You Did Last Summer star is thinking, we can at least suggest that what's inspiring her goes beyond simply Hollywood mercantilism.

Before we leave you, we feel obliged to mention that Gellar's comments absolutely do not constitute a confirmation that the show is returning. While rumors of a Buffy reboot have been circulating for years, especially after American treasure Dolly Parton spoke about possibly producing one, there is no official greenlight for a new Buffy the Vampire series, starring Gellar or not, as of this writing. Still, as Gellar said in her recent interview, there's good reason to hope, even beyond Dexter and Carrie Bradshaw. 

"It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes," Gellar told Barrymore. "I think, more so than ever."
