Passing the torch is a dangerous thing, especially for actors. Dexter was a huge role for Michael C. Hall; the series about a serial killer who targets other killers made him a star and remains his biggest role, so seeing someone else play Dexter in the Original Sin prequel probably brought out a lot of emotions. However, it seems it didn’t take long for Hall to give his blessing to Patrick Gibson as his successor as the Bay Habor Butcher.
Michael C. Hall remains involved in Dexter: Original Sin, despite his character apparently dying at the end of New Blood. Not only is he an executive producer on the prequel series but he also provides the voiceover of Dexter’s inner monologue throughout the show. After the first table read, Gibson, who plays a younger version of Dexter Morgan, impressed Hall enough to give him his blessing.
“I did the table read and got to meet Michael for the first time, and that was the first time we went back to back with me saying a line and him doing a voiceover, and that was probably the most daunting moment of this whole process,” Gibson said in an interview. “After that, he emailed me and we discussed the role. He was incredibly generous and very kind. He was like, ‘I feel like Dexter’s in good hands’ and ‘this is yours now to have your iteration.’”
That endorsement could go a long way to convince fans who are unsure about seeing someone else play their favorite serial killer with a code, but it won’t be until Dexter: Original Sin completes its run that we can really tell if Gibson was ready to step into Michael C. Hall’s bloody footsteps.
Dexter: Original Sin streams Fridays on Paramount+ with Showtime.
