Demon Slayer's Nezuko voice actor Abby Trott has her own headcanon for what she says if she could speak

Popverse interviewed Abby Trott who voices Nezuko in the English dub of Demon Slayer. She shared with us what it's like to voice all of Nezuko's grunts and snarls and what scene was her favorite to record.

The quiet ones. Beware of the quiet ones. Nezuko Kamado is the younger sister of Tanjiro, the main protagonist in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. But she’s not exactly the most talkative character and for good reason. She was a human until Muzan Kibutsuji transformed her into a demon injecting his blood into her and her family, hoping to create a demon resistant to sunlight.

In the anime, Nezuko is voiced by Akari Kito (Japanese) and Abby Trott (English) and the story is building towards the climactic three-film finale, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle. Nezuko lost a great deal of her humanity and memories, but over time she’s seen her brother’s protective nature and has reciprocated that, often coming to his rescue. Unfortunately, she cannot speak much, mostly snarling and grunting through a muzzle, meant to control her instinct to bite humans.

“Yeah, I think that I try to imagine when Nezuko is emoting without saying actual words, what words she would be saying if she were to be saying something in that moment,” Trott explained to Popverse at San Diego Comic-Con 2025. “Because there's definitely intention and feeling behind the noises. And then when we do hear Nezuko speak, it's very impactful in all of those moments.”

“But I also draw a lot of inspiration from Akari Kito's performance, the original Japanese voice of Nezuko. She lays the groundwork with an incredible performance, whether it be speaking or emoting through those noises and grunts. So I definitely pull inspiration from her, too.”

Nezuko’s biggest moment in the series thus far was during the Entertainment District arc in Season 2. Normally, Nezuko is a reserved character, but her dormant power gets triggered in a battle with Daki, an Upper Moon demon who along with her brother Gyutaro have been Nezuko and Tanjiro nemeses up to this arc. Nezuko loses it and goes absolutely feral. She bites through her muzzle, swells up in size and muscle and unleashes on Daki.

“That was a very fun arc for me, that might be my favorite arc of the show for a lot of different reasons,” Trott explained. “For Nezuko, it's a very emotional arc. Especially in that episode where she's fighting Daki.

In this memorable battle, Daki slices Nezuko’s limbs off with her obi sashes, repeatedly, even her head at one point. But Nezuko, already activated in advanced demon mode, congeals her blood so the streams of blood couldn’t break, allowing her to reattach her limbs. Then Nezuko proceeds to brawl and stomp on Daki, which was just the beginning of her demise.

“I think we go from fighting ferociously to by the end of that scene, she's crying and you know, shrinking back into her chibi form as she's being sung to [by Tanjiro]. It's very emotional, but I had a lot of fun with that moment because it's a side of Nezuko that we have not seen yet. So that little maniacal laugh as she's attacking Daki is one of my favorite things to record.”

“We tweaked it,” Trott added about the laugh. “I think we went through a few different versions. I had a take that was a little, because obviously when Nezuko is changing sizes and shapes too, the voice changes as well. So we were thinking about how we should approach it. It should be a bit of a deeper kind of a laugh. So we experimented with different things.”

This battle is significant in Nezuko’s development in the series. She reaches her full potential and powers as a demon, fueled by her rage and Muzan’s blood. Nezuko also showcases her regeneration abilities and manipulates her blood to do incredible things, including combust. We can’t wait to see how Nezuko goes fully demon in the upcoming film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle and maybe, gets her revenge on Muzan.
