Marvel Studios' Jessica Jones costume designer bought every nice purple suit in Manhattan for David Tennant's Mr. Purple... but sadly, he didn't get to keep them all
The MCU's take on the Jessica Jones villain meant that David Tennant got to wear a whole line-up of suits - but he didn't get to keep any.

One of the unsung heroes on any film and television set is always the costume designer. Especially when it comes to bringing a comic book character to life on screen, there is a lot of work that goes into every single choice. For Kilgrave in Jessica Jones, that meant going into Manhattan and clearing out every store of purple suits to try to make David Tennant look the part.
During his panel at MCM Comic Con 2025, David Tennant explained how important it was to have a great costume – and the lengths that went to to make him look the part of Kilgrave in Jessica Jones.
“The costume designer for Jessica Jones when I was on it went round to every sort of high-end suit store in Manhattan and bought every nice purple suit that they had,” he explains. That would be Jessica Jones costume designer Stephanie Maslansky, who worked on all the Netflix/Marvel Studios shows
After that, they had him try on different suits to find the one that suited the character and the actor.
“So, we got to choose from a very love selection.”
However, they didn’t let him walk off with any of them.
“It tends to be if the clothes are very nice, they tend to hang onto them. They don’t really want to give them away.”
While some actors have been known to walk off set with as many souvenirs from their time on a show as possible, it sounds like David Tennant didn’t manage to get any of those high-end purple suits we saw him wear in Jessica Jones. If he manages to return to the MCU at some point like his Jessica Jones co-star Krysten Ritter, hopefully, he’s able to fix that.
