Charlie Cox weighs in on MCU Daredevil's complicated love life with Karen Page and Elektra
Is it really cheating if you’re using a secret identity? (Yes it is)
Let’s face it, love is complicated.
Sometimes your heart is torn between the cute office administrator at your law firm and your college girlfriend (who is now a lethal assassin). Dating isn’t easy, especially if you’re Matt Murdock. The comic book character has been unlucky with love, and his television counterpart has also had a hard time.
The Netflix Daredevil series featured a blossoming romance between Matt Murdock and his office administrator Karen Page. This relationship was complicated by the arrival of Elektra in season 2. This created a complicated situation, not only for Matt, but for the team behind the show. How could the actors and writers explore Matt’s romantic turmoil without making him seem like a horrible person?
Charlie Cox reflected on this dilemma during an appearance at Indiana Comic Convention 2024.
“There’s a period in season 2 where Matt and Karen get really close. We go on a few dates, and we have a kiss, and then at night he’s going out with Elektra. That was just really fun.” That comment caused the panel audience to laugh.
“It was fun in a challenging way, because I truly believe that Matt loves Karen, but he also loves the danger of Elektra. I just saw that as a really fun challenge, because I wanted to feel authentic and romantic, but not duplicitous. I felt like if you watched that and it comes across as him being not a good dude, that would be wrong for him. I feel like you have to feel like he’s being pulled in two different directions and he’s doing his best. They’re just such different people. It was really fun.”
Deborah Ann Woll will reprise her role as Karen Page in Daredevil: Born Again. Matt has recently been having fun with She-Hulk, but perhaps he and Karen will finally be able to settle their complicated relationship.
But I doubt it…this is Daredevil after all.
Fear not, we have the essentials when it comes to Marvel's Daredevil. From the best Daredevil stories of all time, to a guide to watching Daredevil, a comprehensive guide to Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, Marvel's Daredevil actors, ranked from Charlie Cox to Ben Affleck and even Rex Smith, how Frank Miller accidentally killed a Daredevil cartoon (and Marvel killed a book to avoid pissing him off), and even that time we caught Daredevil actor Charlie Cox sneaking into New York Comic Con as Bluey.
