Marvel Studios' Daredevil: Born Again brings bad news to New York City’s vigilantes STRAIGHT FROM Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto's comic run

Wilson Fisk's new objective in Daredevil: Born Again is looking mighty familiar to comics fans.

The first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are finally here, my fellow People Without Fear. And with the beginning of the new series on Disney+ comes a series of shocking revelations about the state of New York City and the man himself, Matt Murdock. If you haven't yet watched the episodes, please do so now, because we're about to get into some wild spoiler territory.

Warning: spoilers ahead for the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again

So [pulls up a chair and sits in it backward], the citizens of New York have elected Wilson Fisk as mayor. This is a bummer. Beyond the fact that 53% of New Yorkers were willing to overlook Fisk's past as the Kingpin of the city's criminal underworld, Fisk's election is about to bring major changes to the vigilante scene in the Great Apple. As Fisk and Matt Murdock catch up over a cup of coffee in a diner in episode 1 ('Heaven's Half Hour'), Fisk reveals that he has plans to crack down on the costumed heroes running through the city once he becomes mayor.

Daredevil readers will recognize Fisk's sentiment from the Devil's Reign event by Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto, which came out in 2021 and 2022. The event spun out of Zdarsky and Checchetto's run on Daredevil at the time, and featured New York's vigilantes responding to Mayor Fisk's decision to outlaw superheroes altogether. Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock is even sporting the same facial hair scruff that Checchetto gave Daredevil in his artwork.

Devil's Reign had far-reaching consequences for the local heroes in the Marvel Universe, including everyone from street-level folk like Daredevil (or Daredevils, rather) and Spider-Man, to the X-Men, and to the Avengers. It should also be noted that Luke Cage became mayor at the end of Devil's Reign because he's the most honorable guy in all of New York City. We still don't know if Mike Colter's Luke Cage is going to appear in Born Again, but I think we can all agree that it would be pretty sweet to see Luke be the mayor that New York actually deserves.

Anyways, we've yet to see how Fisk's policy as mayor will affect folks like Spider-Man and The Punisher in Born Again. We can't imagine it will be for the better, knowing how stubborn both Frank Castle and Wilson Fisk are. And speaking of which, is Peter Parker even old enough to vote? It really is tough being Spider-Man, isn't it.
