If you, like me, have goth tendencies, then Castlevania has got a certain magnetic pull. I can't help it, I see a musty-looking castle, some vampires looking pissed off, a bunch of swords, and oh no! I've fallen down the rabbit hole. There are worse places I or you could end up. Castlevania is based on the iconic video game series of the same title from Konami, particularly Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. It tells the story of a vampire by the name of Dracula who vows to get his revenge on the people of Wallachia after they burn his wife at the stake for witchcraft. Not content to get steamrolled by a vampire, the people of Wallachia fate rests in a troubled monster hunter named Trevor Belmont, Dracula's half-vampire son Alucard (whose name is just "Dracula" spelled backwards), and the magic-wielding Sypha Belnades.
Netflix's Castlevania series has branched out with a sequel series, Castlevania: Nocturne. If you're looking for a place to get started with this witchy video game adaptation, then look no further. We'll parse through the various seasons of the shows and how you can watch them in release and chronological order.
How to watch Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne in release order:
There are four seasons of the Castlevania animated show on Netflix, and the second season of Castlevania: Nocturne is set to hit the streamer in January of 2025. So at the moment, it's not an overwhelming amount of story to wade through. So let's get into it.
- Castlevania season 1 (2017)
- Castlevania season 2 (2018)
- Castlevania season 3 (2020)
- Castlevania season 4 (2021)
- Castlevania: Nocturne season 1 (2023)
- Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 (2025)
How to watch Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne in chronological order:
Thankfully, the timeline in the Castlevania shows matches up with the release order for the shows. That is, the majority of the story in season 1 of Castlevania takes place in the year 1476, while Castlevania: Nocturne kicks off in 1783 before going to 1792. during the French Revolution. Of course, there are flashback scenes sprinkled in Castlevania, but it would be moot to try to excise every scene in every episode.
- Castlevania season 1 (2017) - Begins in 1455 with a pitstop in 1475, then 1476
- Castlevania season 2 (2018)
- Castlevania season 3 (2020)
- Castlevania season 4 (2021)
- Castlevania: Nocturne season 1 (2023) - 1783-1793
- Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 (2025)
Is Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 out?
Not yet, folks! But at this time of writing, the show is set to premiere sometime in January 2025.
Does Castlevania have a season 5?
No, it does not, but if you miss Alucard being a dramatic king, there is always Castlevania: Nocturne.
How long after Castlevania is Nocturne?
Castlevania: Nocturne takes place just over 300 years after the events of Castlevania.
Who is the bad guy in Castlevania: Nocturne?
Why, only one of the most infamous figures in European history: Erzsébet Báthory! Based on the real-life Elizabeth Báthory, who was rumored to bathe in the blood of virgins, Nocturne's Erzsébet uses the chaos of the French Revolution as an opportunity to try to usurp control over the European continent.
Is Alucard going to be in Castlevania: Nocturne?
Alucard is in both seasons of Castlevania: Nocturne, but to avoid spoiling the events of season 1, I won't detail the extent to which he shows up.
