“Acting is a contact sport”: Actor/director Bryce Dallas Howard on stunts, safety, and chasing adrenaline

The actor/director sat down in the Pop Spot at New York Comic Con 2025 for the conversation

In the Pop Spot at New York Comic Con 2025, Popverse’s Ashley V. Robinson had the opportunity to have conversations with some of the convention’s most exciting guests, including actor and director Bryce Dallas Howard. You know Howard from her performances in movies like Jurassic World and Argylle, as well as her work directing several episodes of the Disney+ Star Wars shows. And during the interview with Robinson, Howard explained why she is “obsessed with danger on set.”

The topic was broached by Robinson. “In a recent interview with the Independent, you talked about how obsessed you are with danger on set,” Robinson said. “So, does a stunt coordinator hate to see you coming?”

“What’s interesting is I’m sort of the opposite of what you would think given that quote,” Howard said. “I am incredibly safety conscious, to the point that it does genuinely annoy some stunt coordinators.” She remarked that she never wants an actor to feel uncomfortable on the set.

Howard continued, “But I do also, on the other hand, say for myself when I’m acting: ‘acting is a contact sport.’ So, it is very physical and it is a very physical medium, and stunts and stunt choreography is a huge part of telling the story and pulling off the magic and dazzling audiences. I am very safety conscious, and it is very important that there are opportunities for an audience to viscerally feel that adrenaline rush you get when you are performing a stunt yourself.”
