When a boy and his friends come across mysterious cards, they soon find themselves on the adventure of their lives. Alien creatures, transforming mons, and legendary battles. This is Bakugan.

Bakugan began as a best-selling toy franchise from Spin Master Corp., but it wasn’t long before the lore expanded with an anime series. Bakugan Battle Brawlers was a success, and more shows followed.

But how do you keep them all straight?

That’s what we’re here for. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about watching the Bakugan franchise in release and chronological order. Let’s begin…

How to watch Bakugan in release order

In reality, there are only four Bakugan animes. However, some of the shows are retitled when they enter a new season. For example, Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia is actually season 2 of Bakugan Battle Brawlers.

With all these different titles, it could be difficult to figure out their correct order. Don’t stress, because this release order list should clear up any confusion. For any questions about the classification and chronology of each title, please refer to the next section of the guide.

How to watch Bakugan in chronological order

There are quite a few Bakugan shows, but not all of them are connected. Some of the shows share a continuity, while others take place in an entirely different timeline. Some shows are just retitled versions of a previous show in a new season. How do you keep it all straight? Don’t worry, because this section of the guide breaks it all down.

First Generation

This covers Bakugan Battle Brawlers, the first anime in the Bakugan franchise. The series follows a boy named Dan Kuso, whose life is changed after finding some strange cards that fell from the sky. Subsequent seasons of Battle Brawlers had different subtitles. Baku Tech! Bakugan was a spin-off of Battle Brawlers featuring other characters in the universe.

  • Bakugan Battle Brawlers
  • Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia
  • Bakugan Battle Brawlers: Gundalian Invaders
  • Bakugan: Mechtanium Surge
  • Baku Tech! Bakugan
  • Baku Tech! Bakugan Gachi

Second Generation

This chronology begins with Bakugan: Battle Planet, a reboot of the franchise. Dan and his friends are reimagined as YouTubers (or ViewTubers), whose lives are turned upside down when they come into contact with the Bakugan. Like its predecessor, Bakugan: Battle Planet was given a new title with each season.

  • Bakugan: Battle Planet
  • Bakugan: Armored Alliance
  • Bakugan: Geogan Rising
  • Bakugan: Evolutions
  • Bakugan: Legends

Third Generation

This chronology covers the 2023 streaming series. Like previous entries in the franchise, the adventure begins when Dan and his friends discover the Bakugan.

Live-Action Universe

This timeline is home to the upcoming Bakugan live-action film, which is expected to be another reboot. For more on the Bakugan movie, please see the next section of this guide.

Is there going to be a Bakugan movie?

Earlier this year Deadline reported that Spin Master Corp. was developing a live-action Bakugan film. The film will be directed, written, and produced by Brad Peyton, who is known for directing the 2017 Dwayne Johnson film Rampage. Lindsay Harbert will be joining Peyton to co-write the screenplay.

In a statement to Deadline, Peyton expressed excitement for the project. “Bakugan is ready for the film treatment, and I’m thrilled to be the one to bring it to the big screen for the very first time. With Lindsay and the Spin Master team alongside me, we’re excited to build a hit franchise with global appeal. I am confident we will create a must-see film event that does justice to the unique and epic world that is Bakugan.”

No release date has been announced as of this writing.

How do you actually play Bakugan?

While this guide focuses on the Bakugan anime, it’s come to our attention that some of you are curious about how to play the game. Since the game is related to the anime, we thought it would be appropriate to give you a brief tutorial on how to play.

Players: 2

What you’ll need: 3 Bakugans, 3 character cards (which come with each Bakugan), and 3 gate cards (doesn’t matter which)

  • Step 1 – Set up the Bakugan on the holders that game with your arena.
  • Step 2 – Set up the character cards behind each Bakugan.
  • Step 3 – Each player sets up their gate cards on the arena.
  • Step 4 – Roll your Bakugan towards the gate cards at the same time as your opponent. If you don’t collide with your opponent, roll again. If your Bakugan opens, and your opponent’s do not, you win the round. If both open, then battle.
  • Step 5 – Add the bonus from your gate card (the one you landed on) and the B power from your character card. The higher number wins.
  • Step 6 – First player to win 3 rounds and open their 3 Bakugans is the winner.

There a few variations of the game, and other powerups, but this gives you the basic idea. For a more detailed tutorial, check out this beginner’s video from Bakugan’s official YouTube channel.

What’s the connection between Bakugan and Zoobles?

Zoobles is a spin-off of the Bakugan toy line, meant to appeal to young girls. Like Bakugan, each Zooble is a different creature that can close up into a ball. Spin Master began the product line in 2010 after the success of Bakugan.

The Zooble toy line has inspired an anime of its own, as well as its own video game. However, you shouldn’t worry about including the Zoobles anime in your Bakugan watch order. Although Zoobles are a toy spin-off of Bakugan, their television shows aren’t connected. It’s a completely different franchise with its own lore. Feel free to check it out for fun, but feel obligated if you’re a Bakugan completist.

Where can I watch Bakugan?

Now that you know how to watch Bakugan, let’s go over where you can watch it. Bakugan Battle Brawlers, Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia, Bakugan Battle Brawlers: Gundalian Invaders, and Bakugan: Mechtanium Surge are currently available on Amazon Prime Video.

Bakugan: Battle Planet, Bakugan: Armored Alliance, Bakugan: Geogan Rising, Bakugan: Evolutions, and Bakugan: Legends are currently streaming on Peacock. The 2023 Bakugan reboot is available on Netflix.

As of this writing, the Baku Tech family of shows isn’t available on any streaming services. Please note, the availability of these shows might change as streaming licenses expire, and some shows are moved to different streaming services.

Now you have everything you need to watch Bakugan! Get ready for some battle-brawling action!
