Another awful Melissa McCarthy film finds new success on Netflix this month
Please stop watching terrible films on streaming services out of morbid curiosity, the algorithm thinks you like them
We know that history tends to repeat itself, but we don’t usually expect it to happen so quickly. It seems like just last week that we were talking about a terrible Melissa McCarthy movie that had received renewed interest years after it was originally released, and now Tammy, which also starred Susan Sarandon, Sandra Oh, Dan Aykroyd, and Kathy Bates, is the top film on Netflix for reasons we can’t totally comprehend.
Hot on the heels of the inexplicable resurgence of Identity Thief, Tammy has become the top film on the streaming platform. The 2014 film starred McCarthy as a down-on-her woman on a road trip with her grandmother, played by Sarandon, in a profanity-laden, uneven script that didn’t play to the strengths of either of its leads. Tammy was a box office success but a critical bomb, earning both McCarthy and Sarandon Razzie nominations for their roles, while the film languishes at a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Tammy feels like an attempt to recreate the magic of 2011’s Bridesmaids in an era when the role of loud, drunk, and obnoxious was the only role that McCarthy was offered. The fact it managed to gross more than $100 million at the box office is probably a testament to its cast rather than the quality of the film.
We suspect that everyone who watched Identity Thief decided to check if there was another McCarthy-led film from the early 2010s that wasted the talents of its otherwise successful actors. That is the only explanation we can find for why this movie has attracted such interest lately.
