James Gunn narrows down his search for Supergirl, with three actresses currently in the running
The Woman of Tomorrow's new film is still in early development
Aquaman is barely out of cinemas, and DC is already hard at work rebooting its cinematic universe. According to reports, James Gunn is close to casting for Supergirl, with three actresses in the running to play the Kryptonian in an upcoming movie, with screen testing for each actress reportedly beginning in the next month.
The three actresses being considered for the role are Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly, according to a report by Deadline. As is often the case with movies in a shared universe, the urgency to cast the role comes from the need for the character to make a cameo in an undisclosed DC movie ahead of starring in her own movie, dubbed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That film is still in very early development at Warner Bros. and is still searching for its director, hence Gunn himself being very involved in the casting process.
All three of the actresses mentioned in the report have plenty of acting credits to pull upon. Alcock is fresh off her role as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, while Jones is familiar to fans from her role as Ruby Rossi in CODA and as Kinsey Locke in Locke & Key. Donnelly might have a slight edge over the other two, having already played Supergirl in the animated film Legion of Super-Heroes and the upcoming animated movie Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part One.
While we don’t know which DC movie will introduce us to this new version of Supergirl, it's not impossible it will happen during the upcoming Superman: Legacy, which is currently due to go into production later this year before hitting cinemas on July 11, 2025.
