Spider-Man 2 star reveals why the hit game probably didn't win at the Game Awards (and Spidey fans will understand)
Why did The Game Awards snub Spider-Man 2? According to Yuri Lowenthal, it all goes back to the original theme song.

Spider-Man 2 was one of the biggest video game releases of 2023. The Insomniac game broke multiple sales records, quickly becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game. The video game was also critically acclaimed, receiving 98% on OpenCritic. There is no escaping the impact of Spider-Man 2.
Unless you’re The Game Awards.
The Game Awards is more or less the Oscars for video games. As you can imagine, it was a pretty big deal when Spider-Man 2 was nominated for seven awards, including the coveted 'Game of the Year; spot.
To everyone’s surprise, Spider-Man 2 didn’t win a single award. Gamers were shocked, with some taking to social media to say that Spider-Man 2 had been robbed.
However, Peter Parker voice actor Yuri Lowenthal feels like the entire affair is on-brand for Spider-Man. During a spotlight panel at Megacon 2024, the voice actor reacted to The Game Awards loss.
“I’m so glad that Spidey is so enduring. He’s everybody, but it’s also wish fulfillment. If I had superpowers what would it be like? It wouldn’t be cool all the time, I wouldn’t always make the right choices, it wouldn’t always be easy, and I wouldn’t have lots of money backing me up,” Lowenthal began.
“And that’s why we didn’t win any awards at [the Game Awards],” Lowenthal continued. The mention of the TGAs caused some of the audience to laugh, while others playfully jeered. The loss is still a sore spot.
“It’s in the song,” Lowenthal continued, alluding to the original 1967 Spider-Man theme song. “‘Wealth and fame, he’s ignored, action is his reward.’ That’s what I tell myself to sleep at night anyway. It’s in the literature. It’s in the original text.”
I suppose losing The Game Awards isn’t as bad as your Uncle Ben being shot or your girlfriend falling off a bridge. Maybe next time, Spidey.
