Were Scream’s original killers secretly a couple? Matthew Lillard spills the beans.

Were Stu Macher and Billy Loomis gay? The actors address the longtime fan theory.

The Scream franchise is full of many relationships. Many of them don’t end well, but that’s par for the course when it comes to slasher films. Sometimes these relationships are cut short when someone is slayed by Ghostface. If you and your significant other are lucky enough to survive, you might be disappointed to find that it’s because they were Ghostface. Just ask Sidney Prescott and Sam Carpenter about that last one.

And then there’s Stu Macher and Billy Loomis. The teenage duo worked together to commit a series of murders in the original Scream film. The two killers were portrayed as best friends, but audiences sensed that there might be something more between them. The two best friends shared an electric chemistry, and a bit of physical intimacy. As a result, Scream viewers have spent decades speculating on the true nature of their relationship.

During a panel at Emerald City Comic Con 2023, Matthew Lillard (who played Stu) weighed in on the debate. “Stu and Billy were definitely gay,” Lillard definitively announced. “You just throw that away like that, you just toss it out,” Billy Loomis actor Skeet Ulrich said with astonishment.

But Lillard had receipts. “I said it at the 20th anniversary with Kevin (Williamson), the screenwriter. Somebody asked, ‘Are they gay?’ I was like, ‘They are definitely gay, right Kevin?’ And Kevin was like, ‘Probably.’ So, that’s my take.”

And there you have it, straight from the actor, with backup from the original writer. It doesn’t get more definitive than that.
