The first trailer for Max’s spin-off from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the Colin Farrell vehicle The Penguin, has been released — showcasing that, at its heart, the series is secretly a story about unrequited love. Specifically, the love that Oz Cobblepot wants from Gotham City. Wait, did I say “love”? I meant, “fear and respect for a political and social giant that some mistake for love if they’re really broken inside.”
Which, if you think about it, is everything that anyone needs to know about The Penguin.
The teaser features an almost unrecognizable Colin Farrell waxing nostalgic about how the city treated the death of a gangster from his youth, interspersed with shots of other characters in the series, including Cristin Miloti as Sofia Falcone, Cobblepot’s main competition for ruler of Gotham’s criminal underworld, and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, a jailed mob boss that Cobblepot helped send to prison. A caption explains that the series is “The Next Chapter in The Batman Saga.”

The eight-episode series was written by Lauren LeFranc, with directors including Craig Zobel (The Leftovers) and Helen Shaver (Lovecraft Country, Westworld); Matt Reeves serves as an executive producer alongside Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan, Bill Carraro, LeFranc, Zobel, and Colin Farrell.
The show, initially expected to debut in 2023 but delayed because of the writers’ and actors’ strikes of that year, is now scheduled to begin Fall 2024. (You can keep track of all the upcoming DC movies and shows with our guide right here.)
