New Jurassic World film in development, with original Jurassic Park scribe ushering franchise into new era

A new roar.

We were expecting this news at some point in the near future, but not so soon: Jurassic World is returning with a new movie, and the screenwriter behind the project is no stranger to the franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter dropped the bombshell exclusive yesterday, January 22, claiming the project has been flying under the radar for a while now and already has a script in pretty decent shape. Moreover, longtime Steven Spielberg collaborator David Koepp, who penned Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park from Michael Crichton's novels, is currently handling the drafts. This is an interesting — albeit not entirely unexpected — decision, as the Jurassic World trilogy was completely shepherded by Colin Trevorrow and other younger screenwriters.

Despite the disappointing reviews and fan backlash, Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) more than justified its existence with a $1 billion worldwide haul at the box office, so it makes total sense that Universal and Amblin want to move on a follow-up sooner rather than later. Even before Dominion's release, veteran producer Frank Marshall was teasing more movies after wrapping up the six-movie arc that started in 1993.

Plot details for this new "soft reboot" are being kept under wraps. THR's sources confirm it's launching a "new Jurassic era" and overarching storyline that will seemingly move forward instead of relaunch the franchise. Looking at Dominion's lingering story threads and expansive worldbuilding (with planet Earth's ecosystems now also housing many prehistoric species due to mankind's interference), it's not hard to imagine one or two potential directions the series could be heading in.

With the project being fast-tracked as we speak and unconfirmed rumblings of production potentially starting in the coming months, expect updates soon.
