It was an announcement that we’ve been expecting for a while now. Ever since Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series came out, it has consistently been at the top of their weekly charts and has enjoyed a warm reception from fans. Now, it looks like the streamer is ready to commit to a trip to Ba Sing Se during season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Not only that but the numbers for the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been strong enough for Netflix to want to finish off Aang’s story. In a press release, the company confirmed that the show had been renewed for an additional two seasons, giving the live-action adaptation the same overall structure of as the original animated series. They haven’t released any further information about episode count, however.
We can’t say we’re surprised by the announcement – it has felt like a matter of when rather than if Netflix would be bringing back Avatar: The Last Airbender for a second season. It is, however, slightly surprising that they’ve committed to the full three-season arc at this stage. Much of the original show’s best moments come in the second and third seasons, so there is definitely plenty of story to work with. However, Netflix has typically been cautious when renewing shows of this scale in the past. Even One Piece, which was one of their best-received adaptations in recent years, has only been renewed for one season at a time.
What the renewal announcement does allow is filming both the second and third seasons at the same time, something that could help prevent the show’s young cast from mysteriously aging a year or more between seasons. This is just speculation, but we do wonder if that has something to do with Netflix’s decision.
