Forget Young Sheldon, CBS calls for Young Gibbs in prequel series to NCIS
Mark Harmon returns to his iconic character (as narrator)
Though Mark Harmon left his long running hit show NCIS in 2021, he hasn't completely left his iconic character Leroy Jethro Gibbs behind. In fact, he's returning to Gibbs in a new NCIS prequel series that CBS has just ordered. The series will follow a young Gibbs in 1991 at the very beginning of his NCIS career, and years before we see him in the NCIS series we're familiar with. The official logline for the series reads, “In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.”
This new NCIS prequel series will be titled NCIS: Origins and will air in the 2024-2025 season. Harmon will be narrating the show and will also executive produce with his son, Sean Harmon, who previously played a younger version of Gibbs in the original NCIS (another young Gibbs was played by Micah Tayloe Owens). However, it seems that the younger Harmon will not be returning to the role that he and his father shared, and casting for the role will begin soon.
NCIS: Origins will be co-showrun by long-time NCIS writers David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, who co-wrote the pilot as well. North and Monreal will also serve as executive producers. This series will join other NCIS spinoffs NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawaii, and NCIS: Sydney.
