She might be able to defy gravity, but Elphaba can’t avoid the film classification system. With the film version of Wicked about to land in cinemas around the world, we’re wondering exactly what to expect from the musical fantasy adventure. Wicked’s age rating tells us that it won’t be deviating too far from the stage production.
What is Wicked’s age rating in the US?
Everyone can cite something in The Wizard of Oz film that became nightmare fuel for them. Usually it is the flying monkeys but that bit where the trees come to life and pelt Dorthy with apples is pretty weird too. The Wicked musical has plenty of dark moments in it so it shouldn’t be a surprise that some of that makes it into the film.
The MPA has listed Wicked as PG, citing “some scary action, thematic material, and brief suggestive material” as the reason. That is in line with what we expected; the stage musical goes to some dark places but it remains easily accessible to families.
What is Wicked’s age rating in the UK?
The BBFC, the governing body responsible for giving age ratings to movies in the UK, hasn’t given Wicked an official rating. We expect it to be either a PG or a 12A rating when it does get released, but we won’t know for sure until closer to the film’s release date.
Wicked is due out on November 22, 2024 and will star Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Jonathan Bailey.
