PG-13 or Rated R? 3 weeks out from its release date, Venom: The Last Dance still hasn't secured an age rating from the MPA

Just how bloody will the final entry in the Venom trilogy be? We're still waiting to find out.

We’re now just a few weeks away from the release of Venom: The Last Dance, which promises to bring Tom Hardy’s love affair with the alien goop inside his head to a climatic – and potentially fatal – conclusion. However, how bloody is the third Venom movie going to be? That is the question hanging over fans because we still don’t know exactly what the age rating for Venom: The Last Dance will be.

Tickets for Venom: The Last Dance are already available to purchase, and several theater chains have already listed the film as PG-13, but thus far an official rating from the MPA hasn’t been listed for the film. That isn’t necessarily cause for alarm – Sony waited until two weeks before the woefully misguided Madame Web movie before it got an age rating – but it does mean that fans don’t have a full picture of what to expect from the movie before picking up tickets. Even the theater chains that list PG-13 as the film's rating don't give the usual content warning that we've seen for films like Deadpool & Wolverine, so they may be going off of word from the studio rather than an official rating.

What could be the reason for the delay? It could be that the studio is still editing Venom: The Last Dance to try to push the PG-13 rating as far as possible without earning an R rating instead. We know that Tom Hardy has said that they were allowed to “push it” with regard to the content of the final movie in the Venom trilogy. Frustratingly, the movie has been listed as 15 in the UK, which puts it squarely between PG-13 and R, so that is no help in solving this mystery.

Most likely, the age rating for Venom: The Last Dance will be PG-13, just like the previous two films in the series. Studios rarely change the rating of a franchise that has proven to be successful, but Sony is certainly taking their time deciding just how adult Tom Hardy’s final outing as Eddie Brock will be.
