Zombie classic Train to Busan returns to US theaters for 10th anniversary re-release this summer

Train to Busan is getting a big screen re-release, ahead of a new zombie movie from the same director

A horror classic is speeding back into North American theaters this summer — and it’s just a preview of more scares to come. Top-level Korean zombie movie Train to Busan will get a 10th anniversary re-release in the United States and Canada in August, just two weeks before the director’s latest horror movie is set to infect theaters.

Indie distributor Well Go USA Entertainment has announced that Yeon Sang-ho’s iconic 2016 movie will be released across North America in 4K for the first time on the big screen starting August 14, ahead of the August 28 release of Colony, the director’s next zombie movie.

For those unfamiliar with Train to Busan, the movie is set on a high speed train traveling from Seoul to Busan as a zombie outbreak takes hold of the country; as might be expected, there are zombies on the train as well, leading to all manner of exciting and terrifying moments. The movie was acclaimed around the world, and led to both an animated prequel and live-action spin-off, 2020’s Peninsula.

Colony, meanwhile, has been picked up by Well Go USA ahead of the movie’s world premiere, currently set for May’s Cannes Film Festival. (Train to Busan also debuted at Cannes in 2016.) The official description of the movie sounds very promising for those of us who like body horror freak-outs: “Yeon Sang-ho’s newest feature, Colony, follows Professor Se-jeong as she is thrust into a terrifying hellscape when a mutating virus is unleashed during a biotech conference, forcing authorities to seal the facility to contain the outbreak. Unable to escape, Se-jeong and a group of survivors must fight to stay alive as the infected undergo horrific transformations and threaten to spread the virus.”

“No one delivers zombie films quite like Yeon Sang-ho,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President and CEO of Well Go USA. “”rain to Busan redefined the genre for audiences around the world, and we’re excited to bring it back to theaters in 4K for its 10th anniversary, With Colony, he takes that intensity and scale even further, delivering a bold and terrifying new vision for fans.”

More details about the Train to Busan re-release will arrive in the coming months.
