Toy Story 5's teaser wants to know why Kids These Days won't get off their tablets

Pixar has revealed the teaser trailer for the fifth(!) installment of its most iconic franchise, Toy Story. But we have to ask - just which age group is it for?

Wanna think about something weird? The Toys from Toy Story are old. Say Buzz Lightyear came out of the factory shortly before the events of Toy Story 1 - circa 1995 - that puts him at just about 30. Then Toy Story 2 confirms Sheriff Woody dolls are from - what, the 1950s? - meaning Woody is pushing 70 at least by this point. The toy industry, and movies written around it, have changed a great deal in those decades since we first heard Randy Newman declare his friendship to all of us - and judging by its first teaser trailer, that's kinda the point of Toy Story 5.

Before we get into that, though, watch the trailer for yourself right here:

There's a whole bunch to unpack in these 49 seconds, not the least of which is whether Bonnie's new toy, Lilly Pad, will be an antagonist or just a new member of the gang the rest will have to adjust to, like Buzz was in the first film. Also, I have some big questions about how a digital tablet is going to make for an an engaging character in a world of animated toys, but hey, we won't talk about that now.

The big thing I think is worth mentioning here is that this movie will deal with a concept its presumed target audience will be largely unfamiliar with - the transition between physical toys and digital devices for play. "In summer 2026," reads the teaser, "The age of toys is over(?)" - I don't know how much of an impact that idea is going to have on the 5-10-year olds who have been going to digital devices for playtime their entire lives.

Granted, Toy Story always kinda works for an older audience (many of us grew up alongside Andy, after all), but that certainly isn't who Pixar is primarily making the movies for, so it does baffle us a bit that this plot point seems to be at the heart of the film. What's next, a Monsters Inc. in which the human-facing job market is starting to collapse?

Toy Story 5 comes to theaters June 19, 2026.

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
