Toy Story 5 really is growing up - with the franchise's first PG-rating

I don't know, that new, over-G rating for Toy Story 5 has me wondering if we're going to get our first 'gol-darnit' of the franchise. Or perhaps Woody will have tequila

Toy Story 5 is breaking a streak that the franchise has held since the first film came out in 1995. And before you ask - no, it's not those freaky toys Sid made finding love. Though if that did happen, that could be a reason for what's actually going down. Anyway, what Toy Story 5's real comb breaker is has everything to do with its target audience: for the first time in franchise history a Toy Story film will be rated PG.

Now that your shock has abated, let's get into this. News of the rating first broke over at The Direct, who themselves were reporting based off of the private screenings page for theater company Cinemark. Listed on that page was the first showing of the MPAA rating, a franchise first after over 30 years of G-rated fun for all audiences.

Of course, as you might've gathered from the decently third-party source, we don't have any available information on why Toy Story 5 will be rated PG instead of G. According to the MPAA's official website, a PG rating means "Parents [are] urged to give “parental guidance.” May contain some material parents might not like for their young children." Again, it's not a terribly specific answer to the question.

But will that keep me from speculating here in the hallowed halls of Popverse, dear reader? It certainly will not, so let me pitch this to you: what if Toy Story 5 is the first movie in which we hear a toy swear? Oh yeah, I'm going there - as pointed out by reddit user Both-Tadpole-668, PG-rated hit Shrek uses "ass," "damn," and in one instance, "hell."

And if they're good enough for Shrek, I say they're good enough for Buzz, Woody, the spoon thing, and the gang.

Toy Story 5 hits theaters June 19.
