Andy Serkis won’t say who the protagonist is for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, or what the story is
Andy Serkis says he’ll reveal more about the story and characters for The Hunt for Gollum in early 2027

In 2027 moviegoers will return to Middle-earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Unlike previous Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, however, The Hunt for Gollum isn’t based on a J.R.R Tolkien novel and appears to be telling an original story... maybe. We know the film is set before Frodo leaves the Shire in The Fellowship of the Ring, but aside from that details are vague, and that’s just the way director (and lead actor) Andy Serkis likes it.
“I really don’t want to give too much away about it because we will be talking about this further down the line, probably in about a year’s time,” The Hunt for Gollum director Andy Serkis said during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. When asked who the main character is, Serkis was tight-lipped. “I say nothing at this point about the story,” he said before laughing.
That's not to say that he wasn't willing to give some kind of a hint as to what audiences could expect in the movie, thankfully. “There was a desire for a series of return to Middle-earth movies,” he explained, “and this seemed to be a great way in to be able to bring some of the cast back, but also see this is a very much more intimate story, and a deep dive psychological investigation into a character who has become sort of absorbed into public consciousness in rather a large way.”
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17, 2027
