In time for what would have been the late actor’s 72nd birthday, Christopher Reeve is about to return to movie theaters, with Warner Bros. Discovery announcing that Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a documentary about the man who memorably brought Superman to life on the big screen in the 1970s and ‘80s, will receive a two-night theatrical release this September.
The documentary from directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival 2024, features never-before-seen footage and interviews of the Superman actor, as well as new interviews with those who knew him, as it follows Reeve in the wake of the 1995 horse-riding accident that almost killed him, and left him paralyzed from the neck down. Amongst the unseen footage are home movies and personal material belonging to Reeve’s family, with his three children offering up their first extended interviews about the father as part of the feature.
Warner Bros. Discovery purchased the rights to the movie back in February, under the joint banners of DC Studios, HBO Documentary Films, and CNN Films. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran announced to theater owners in April that the movie would receive a theatrical release — something that came as a surprise to many industry watchers.
In a statement, Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, said, "On behalf of not only Warner Bros., but also my colleagues at DC, HBO and CNN, it’s an honor to be a part of bringing Christopher Reeve and his singular legacy to audiences again. It was at this very studio where he made us all believe a man could fly, and this documentary reveals what made him a true hero, on- and off-screen. Partnering with our friends at Fathom Events to deliver this very special film to the big screen was an opportunity we could not pass up."
The movie will be play in theaters September 21, and then have an encore screening September 25... which happens to be Reeve's birthday. More information about participating theaters can be found here.
