When Superman flies into theaters just a few scant hours from this writing, we expect to see many strange things. An element man, a salamanderly kaiju, a Green Lantern haircut that even a third grader would know looks childish. But according to writer/director James Gunn, all those things pale in comparison to one moment that Gunn calls "the most unusual thing" in the film. And it's... a dialogue scene?

This is what Gunn said in a recent interview with The Times regarding not just his take on DC's flagship hero, but on superhero movies in general. During the course of the discussion, Gunn's interviewer brought up a moment of conversation between Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane and David Corenswet's Superman/Clark Kent, in which the two argue over Superman's choice to get involved in an international conflict that was bordering on a war.

"[That scene] is definitely the most unusual thing that we put in the movie," says Guardians of the Galaxy director Gunn, "Yes, it’s about politics [...] But on another level it’s about morality. Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It’s really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart."

However, the weirdness of this being the film's strangest addition as compared to its many other sci-fi elements is not lost on Gunn.

"There is also a flying dog in the film who wears a cape," says the DCU co-lead, "And come on, Clark has glasses and people don’t know who he is. He can hold up a building. He’s wearing a costume. [...] There’s something peculiar about a person who makes a costume. Clark is a peculiar guy."

Again, we don't know if the whole costume thing is weirder than "a man whose skin can be zirconium." But hey, you do you, James. We won't stop you.
