There's a mystery DC Studios project in the works that James Gunn hasn't announced because he thinks it would be too easy for another studio to rip off, the Superman director reveals

There's an unannounced DC Studios project that's been in the mix for years, and is "one of the main things" for the studio, says Superman director James Gunn - but what is it?

As we race towards the release of DC Studios’ first big screen project Superman, you might be thinking about what’s next — and looking to the January 2023 announcement of DC’s lengthy project slate for guidance. Here’s the thing, though: Superman writer/director (and DC Studios co-head) James Gunn has revealed that there’s another project that’s been in the mix since before that 2023 announcement that he’s been keeping under wraps all along.

“I’m about to wrap Peacemaker. Peacemaker and Superman are both going to end up being sound mixed and color timed at about the same time in the next two weeks,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly when asked about DC’s upcoming slate. “We're going to see early episodes of that soon. Lanterns is halfway through filming. We're going to see early episodes of that soon. Then there's another TV show that's my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon. It's just my favorite thing. And then there's the movie... Oh shit! I don't know what I'm allowed to say or not say, but there's a couple of other movies that are being written, one of which is in pretty good shape, another which is kind of closer to the start, but we feel positive about.”

But wait: let’s go back to this “favorite thing,” shall we? Gunn wasn’t spilling many beans about it, but he said something that’s sure to start speculation.

“My favorite thing has not been announced at all,” he teased. “A couple of those things [announced in January 2023] are in pretty good shape in terms of coming up, but there was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO] David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that's one of the main things.”

Okay, so what exactly could have been held back from a DC announcement because another company could rip off easily…? And what other company? Surely Marvel is too far along in its own process to rip off DC at this point — but maybe not

Superman is in theaters July 11, Peacemaker debuts on HBO Max August 21. Beyond that… well, let’s wait and see what gets announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, shall we…?
