It’s almost time to look up once again.
With just a handful of months before the Man of Steel returns to movie theaters, DC and Warner Bros. unveiled a new look behind the scenes of James Gunn’s Superman to movie theater owners at Las Vegas industry convention CinemaCon Tuesday evening. An exclusive scene was also shown to the in-personal audience, which is an extended version of the opening of the first trailer for the movie, with Krypto rescuing a beaten Superman and taking him to the Fortress of Solitude.
Adopting the Summer of Superman branding already announced by DC's publishing arm, DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran showed up on stage to introduce David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult in person, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the movie. In that footage, Brosnahan said that, while she thought that the prospect of telling a new Superman project was daunting, "in James Gunn we trust, and I think we can do it."
On stage, Gunn revealed that he was originally offered the chance to make a Superman movie in 2018, but he opted to make The Suicide Squad instead, describing it as an "easier" route for him at the time. The new movie, he promised, would be "utterly fantastic and utterly human at the same time." What should we expect from the movie? Gunn offered some specific teases: pocket universes, sorcery, flying dogs, and Max Fleischer cartoons.
Hoult added, "David dressed as Superman, flying into the sunset... I felt like I was witnessing the magic of cinema in first person, in real time."
Corenswet was suitably humble about his new role, saying, "It’s a great honor to play a role that is so clearly in the public consciousness. You know what his symbol means... it feels like you’re riding a tidal wave of good vibes and creative choices."
Gunn said that the movie "celebrates kindness and love." We'll get to see that for ourselves when Superman is released in theaters July 11. Those entirely impatient for a chance to see what’s happening when they look up in the skies can check out the extended preview footage mentioned above when it's attached to A Minecraft Movie, heading to theaters April 4.
