DC boss James Gunn and Superman have made more fans stream Man of Steel & Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story

Superman is cool again, and Warner Bros. has the streaming numbers to prove it

What's that old phrase? A rising tide lifts all Kryptonian escape vessels? It's something like that, anyway, and some recent streaming numbers coming out of the company that owns Superman seems to be proving it right. According to Warner Bros., this summer's James Gunn-directed Superman is bringing viewers to other Superman fare in droves, driving up some S-emblazoned projects to heights worthy of the man who Leaps Tall Buildings in a Single Bound.

We caught the story when the Warner Bros. Sales Department posted some impressive Superman numbers to their Twitter/X page. After the release of Gunn's Superman, which served as the first new DCU project to make it onto the big screen, other Superman films soared. Zack Snyder's Man of Steel viewership went up by 218%, and the original Richard Donner Superman: The Movie grew by 332%. Even Peacemaker season 1, which is not much of a Superman project but whose second season was impacted greatly by the events of this summer's film, saw a 91% increase in watchers.

The real victory in these numbers, though, belongs to Warner Bros. documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. The inspirational documentary, about perhaps the most well-known actor to ever wear the red cape, saw a viewership jump that tallied up to a whopping 1,206%.

Now there's a number that would piss off Lex Luthor.

If you think about it, it makes all the sense in the world that the Christopher Reeve story would be bolstered by James Gunn's extra-positive take on the Man of Steel. So much of this summer's movie is about being a hero in a world that makes that more difficult every day, and the story of Christopher Reeve, which is all about defeating the odds after a tragic accident left him paralyzed, is a great follow-up.

Superman is in theaters now. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (and a bunch of other great Superman stuff!) is streaming now on HBO Max.

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
