Think of it as the DC team-up fans never got to enjoy, as Supergirl and Batgirl came together behind the scenes to support each other in the wake of big changes to the DCU. Sure, we didn’t see it onscreen, but Sasha Calle — who played Supergirl in 2023’s The Flash — has opened up about her friendship with Leslie Grace, who played Batgirl in the never-released movie of the same name.
The two had a rough couple of years; Grace’s Batgirl was shelved in August 2022, a full year before The Flash stumbled at the box office, driving the final nail in the coffin for the so-called DCEU. (Sure enough, just two months later, James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the new bosses of the newly-formed DC Studios, rebooting the whole thing.)
Turns out, Calle has revealed in a new interview, Grace proved to be a hero in her own right when helping Calle deal with the difficulty of departing a superhero universe she’d barely arrived in.
“I don’t know what I would’ve done without Leslie, to be honest with you. I feel like she got it even worse, and yet, she was just this divine light of love and warmth,” Calle told the Hollywood Reporter. “And even though it came from a really confusing and painful situation, we got to have this beautiful friendship that is true and honest and sincere and kind. We were there for each other, and I am really happy that we had each other then.”
Talking about her experience promoting The Flash — a task that included sidestepping questions about the movie’s star, who had become a controversial figure with his own legal battles, as well as dealing with questions about their own future as the character with a reboot looming — Calle said, “It was very hard, I have to say. I had bittersweet feelings as I was maneuvering everything… I was very excited, but there were a lot of unanswered questions for me, so it was very bittersweet.”
While Calle won’t return to the DCU, Supergirl will; the character will even be getting her own movie with Milly Allcock in the lead role. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is expected to be released in June 2026.
