DC Studios boss James Gunn confirms that the studio's second movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, has a new title a year before release

Say goodbye, Woman of Tomorrow

First, it was DC Studios’ Superman that lost its subtitle — it was originally announced as Superman: Legacy — and now the same is true of the studio’s second big screen release, which was announced (and filmed) as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. According to studio co-head James Gunn, however, that’s not what the movie is called anymore.

Talking to Rolling Stone as part of a wide-ranging profile, Gunn confirms that the Woman of Tomorrow is no more. “I think it’s just called Supergirl,” he confirms when asked.

The Woman of Tomorrow title came from the 2021 comic book series that served as source material for the movie, directed by Craig Gillespie. That comic, by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, used the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow — a play on the longstanding “Man of Tomorrow” tagline for the character’s cousin, Superman — to differentiate itself from other Supergirl comic book series, and also to denote that the comic offered a more mature take on the character and her place in the DCU. Obviously, that’s less of a concern for DC Studios; after all, this will only be the second Supergirl movie in 40 years.

Gunn sounded enthusiastic about the movie. “I was really involved at the script stage, but then Craig has just been such a great partner,” he said, saying that he wasn’t really on the set of the movie, which recently finished principal photography in London. “He’s just been doing his thing. You never know how something cuts together, but right now it looks amazing. It’s really cool stuff.”

Supergirl — no longer Woman of Tomorrow — is set for a June 26, 2026 release. The character, played by Milly Alcock, will make her debut in this summer's Superman, in theaters July 11.
