Our Flag Means Death star Taika Waititi is too busy to work on his Star Wars movie according to Lucasfilm boss, but she hopes "they get there" eventually

Speaking at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan, Kathleen Kennedy says that Waititi will get to his Star Wars film when he's ready, and holds out hope it'll happen

There's probably some Jedi proverb out there about patience, and even though I'm forgetting it, you're going to have to hold to its message right now. That is, if you're excited about a Taika Waititi-helmed Star Wars film - and if you clicked on this link, we suppose that you are. According to Lucasfilm's boss, patience is exactly what you're going to need to enjoy that hopefully-happening film, as Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Waititi is too busy right now to get to his story in the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

The quote comes from Star Wars Celebration 2025, where Kennedy was of course one of the guests of honor. Speaking to ScreenRant, Kennedy was asked about the progress of Taika Waititi's Star Wars film, which was announced all the way back in 2020, and she had this to say about it:

"Taika is on Taika time... I've just continually said to him, look, when you feel that you're ready and you can really devote the time, we're going to do it. We'll be waiting... I'm just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie."

Depending on whether you're a glass half-full or glass half-empty kind of Star Wars fan, you can kind of take this statement however you want (except you have to accept that the liquid in the glass is that green milk that Luke drinks in Last Jedi). If you want to be optimistic about it, you can take Kennedy's statement of "when you feel you're ready [...] we're going to do it" to be a pseudo-confirmation that the project is still actively in the works. On the other hand, you can take her quote "I'm just hoping we get there" as something to be nervous about.

Either way, Kennedy's statement is certainly true - Taika is, as the Star Wars exec says, on Taika time. In just a few days, it will have been a full five years since Waititi's Star Wars film was announced, and he's had the time to make another Thor, create and star in the biggest pirate TV show in history, and even appear on RuPaul's Drag Race. He's reportedly currently working on movie adaptations of both Kazuo Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun and Percival Everett's James.

With a schedule like that, I don't know how soon it's going to be that we hear more from Waititi about his Galactic franchise entry, and I don't know how long a forgotten Jedi proverb can keep fans from abandoning hope. After all, as the Sith have done a pretty good job proving, a Jedi proverb can only go so far.
