The Last Jedi director’s new Star Wars trilogy isn’t happening anytime soon - but don’t say it’ll never appear

Rian Johnson is busy promoting the third Knives Out movie for Netflix, but part of him will always be thinking about Star Wars.

It seems like no one has any lukewarm thoughts on the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but Disney and Lucasfilm clearly liked The Last Jedi enough to want Rian Johnson back for another trilogy of movies. However, a Rian Johnson-helmed Star Wars trilogy has been in development for so long that most fans don’t think it will ever happen, but Johnson says he isn’t quite ready to say goodbye to Star Wars forever.

“A part of my brain will always be in Star Wars,” Rian Johnson said in a recent interview. “It’s so much a part of me and the way I think.” The same interview describes Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy, which has been in development since 2017, as “effectively dead,” though it isn’t clear if that sentiment is from the director or from the outlet.

Even if it looks like Rian Johnson isn’t going to give us the Star Wars sequel trilogy we hoped for, it is clear that he isn’t ready to leave a galaxy far, far away just yet. While he’s currently focused pretty heavily on promoting the third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, for Netflix, this is the final film of that original agreement. That frees him up to work on other things, though he’s said he’d love to keep making Knives Out movies as long as he and Daniel Craig are still alive to do them.

So, if you have been wanting to see what a new Star Wars trilogy directed by Rian Johnson looks like, you might be out of luck. Still, we wouldn’t give up hope of seeing him back in the Star Wars universe eventually.
