Star Wars star John Boyega thinks Rey and Kylo Ren's romance was toxic, and reveals the advice Finn would give to Daisy Ripley's Rey
John Boyega isn’t a fan of the Rey/Kylo Ren relationship in Star Wars

Chicago's C2E2 2025 was three days of comics, community, celebrities, and pizza (Pequod's, if you want to know). Read our full recap of the weekend, watch all of the Main Stage panel videos, see all the best cosplay photos, and more. And if you want to do it all again next year, we've got the dates for C2E2 2026, too.
The Jedi are great warriors, but their love lives are a bit messy.
Throughout the Star Wars saga, we’ve seen various Jedi make problematic relationship decisions. The less said about Anakin and Padme’s marriage, the better. And then there’s the way Luke was catching feelings for Leia, who turned out to be his twin sister.
When you put that in perspective, Rey’s weird relationship with Kylo Ren makes sense. I guess it’s just the Jedi way. While the two never officially dated, there was some flirtatious energy between them, culminating in a kiss during the final act of 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Speaking to a crowd at the John Boyega: The Force of Talent panel at C2E2 2025, John Boyega, who played Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, gave his unfiltered thoughts about the problematic pairing.
“Ladies in the room, when he is pursuing you, him trying to kill you is not a part of the romance,” Boyega said. “Chasing him and saying, ‘We could become something powerful,’ and they’re like, ‘I wouldn’t tell my sisters to do that.’ That kind of reflects off the spiritual element to Star Wars. The fact that she recognized the good and was fighting for it.
Boyega then told the audience how Finn would handle the situation. “If I was there, Finn should have had a line where he said, ‘Girl, leave him be. Come home with me.’”
Try as you might Finn, but as long as Star Wars movies are being made, Jedi are going to make messy decisions with their love lives.
