Ryan Gosling to reveal the future of Star Wars past Episode 9 with Starfighter (and we have a release date!)

Ryan Gosling will star in the first movie set post-Rise of Skywalker, out in 2027

Fans eager to find out what happens next in the Star Wars Saga won’t have long to wait. Director Shawn Levy showed up on stage at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025 to reveal that he’s about to shoot his new Star Wars project this fall, and that it’ll take place after The Rise of Skywalker.

Levy was joined on stage by Ryan Gosling, who was confirmed to be the lead in the movie, which will be titled Star Wars: Straighter. No details were given out about the movie — like, you know, who Gosling will play — other than it is a “standalone adventure” that will take place “a few years after Episode 9. What could that mean?” Teased Levy. “It could mean so many things!”

(The Mandalorian and Ahsoka director Dave Filoni, also on stage, told Levy, “we won’t say what that means.")

“This script is so good," says Gosling. "It’s filled with so much heart and adventure and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn."

Gosling demonstrated his Star Wars credentials by sharing a picture of his Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back bedspread from when he was a kid. (True story; I had the same bedspread.) “I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I ever saw the movie,” Gosling told the audience.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released May 28, 2027.
